Joan Hickson has designed costumes for Once Upon A Dragon, The Devils Larder and Roam for Grid Iron (Edinburgh) – nominated for best design in the critics’ award for theatre in Scotland, The Heights for Playgroup, Ridley Walker and The Boy Soldier for Red Kettle, The Rep Experiment for Once Off Productions; The Winter’s Tale, medEia, The Hairy Ape, Woyzeck, The Tempest, Losing Steam and A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Corcadorca.
Joan has a BA in Fashion Design from Limerick College of Art and Design. In 1998, she received the Jim Kemmy Young Designer Award and in 2000, she won the Smirnoff Young Designer Award going on to represent Ireland in New York for the International fashion awards. That same year, she was invited into the Cork Opera House to design costumes for the Christmas Pantomime Cinderella and has been working in the area of costume design ever since. Highlights from her career to date would include Merchant of Venice and Devil’s Larder for Cork City of Culture in 2005 with Corcadorca (with whom Joan has enjoyed a long association) and The Sound of Music for Cork Opera House in 2012. Film work includes Shem the Penman Sings Again.
Joan is currently working on Grease for Cork Opera House following the sell-out success of The Sound of Music last year.
